PSHE
Personal, Social, Health Education or PSHE, like no other subject, addresses the whole child. It is not examined or graded but deals with issues which affect each child and all communities; such as health, relationships, positive and negative emotions.
Each form in the Prep School has one PSHE lesson a week. In Years 3 and 4 these lessons are taken by the form teacher, reinforcing the relationship between teacher and pupil. In Years 5 to 8 these lessons are taken by the Head of PSHE, establishing continuity and an open relationship. All lessons are taught in mixed ability groups.
Discussion or Circle Time plays an important part of PSHE lessons, where children learn to form and express opinions, as well as appreciating and respecting the opinions of others. A key aim of PSHE is to develop confidence and responsibility and to build self esteem. The children look at what constitutes a healthy life style and are helped to make informed decisions regarding personal and social issues. PSHE encourages children to be independent, to know themselves as individuals yet also appreciate that they are part of a school community and a larger democratic society.
National Curriculum guidelines are followed but there is flexibility, enabling staff to address issues as they arise.
PSHE is part of real life and never out of the news. Its importance, as part of the curriculum, is recognised and encouraged. Pastoral issues like bullying and racism are discussed and any problems are addressed.
As a Preparatory school, our aim is to prepare children for life in senior school. PSHE helps us to achieve this aim and prepare the children for their future lives, as individuals and members of a wider society.
