Science

science_1_x_130.jpg
The aim of the Science department is to stimulate and excite pupils' curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It will satisfy this curiosity with knowledge, gained from direct practical experience at all levels. In addition, we encourage critical and creative thought and help enable pupils to understand how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change impacting on industry, business and medicine. Children will learn to question and discuss science - based issues that may affect their own lives.

Specialist staff in fully equipped laboratories teaches all groups. The curriculum follows the Common Entrance syllabus to ensure that children are fully prepared for their final entrance examinations at 13+. All knowledge is gained through discussion, practical and creative work.

Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in a residential field trip to Cornwall. Competitions and visiting speakers create further interest outside the classroom.

Years 3 and 4 have one double and one single lesson each week. They are involved in work designed to stimulate their scientific skills, particularly their basic practical skills.

Year 5 have two double lessons a week and Year 6 have two double lessons and one single lesson. The children become involved in more advanced types of practical work. The use of Bunsen burners and chemicals creates the type of excitement that never seems to be forgotten. By the end of Year 6 all the 11+ C.E. syllabus has been completed.

In Year 7 the pupils begin serious preparation for their 13+ C.E. They formalise the subject into the 3 Sciences, completing Modules of work and regular assessments in each area. They are issued with textbooks and workbooks to ensure that every child has access to all the information required.

In Year 8 the 13+ syllabus is completed well before the C.E. mocks in February. This leaves extensive time for a structured revision programme.
Scholarship pupils, having completed the C.E. syllabus, are individually prepared for their specific school.

A revision activity after school enables any pupil struggling to cope with the C.E. work ample opportunity to have extensive support.
